It used to be top knotch but as new codec were released it lacked the resources to play those files. In those cases it will only play the audio track or not be able to play anything at all. But what I've always loved about this player is most controls easily accessible from the keyboard without going through various menus and sub-menus.

IMO, there are more play options than VLC or Windows default Media Player. We can easily change screen format or simply match the file output to the monitor resolution or vice-versa (4:3, 16:9, 1.85:1, 2.35:1 or custom size). Both VLC and Media Player can't do that.

The other downside of this player is unless the file is encoded for portrait mode for newer shorts formats, it will play those files sideways with no way to rotate them 90°. At least both VLC and Windows default Media Player both can rotate a video clip. But both are limited to their fast forward options.

I can set 3 forward intervals and 3 backwards ones. I can even change the playback speed from 1/4 speed to x4 speed backwards and forward. VLC and Media Player both can only jump forward or backward by a preset time duration with no other options or ways to change them.
At least with ALPlayer I can set any duration I want for the forward arrow key. Then a different one for the CTRL + (right arrow) and a different one for SHIFT + (right arrow). I have mine set to 10s, 60s and 300s.

I even love the fact I can change the subtitle size on the fly or even move it further up or down out of the way. The only thing this player can't do is rotate videos.
